IP right filings increase in expectations of economic turnaround
101,310 applications filed in the 4th quarter of 2009… 2.4% increase compared to that of the previous year
Filings of IP right in the 4th quarter of 2009 turned out to have increased a little compared to the same period of the previous year with the expectations of economic turnaround.
According to the “IP right trends in the 4th quarter, 2009” released on January 24 by the KIPO, applications of IP right in the 4the quarter of 2009 have reached 101,310 filings, which was a 2.4% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.
The increase in IP right filings is seen to reflect, according to the KIPO’s analysis, the industry’s appreciation of the value of renovation emphasizing on the differentiation from conventional product and the change in consuming pattern stemming from the rediscovery of traditional foods such as Korean traditional rice wine.
Seen per types of IP rights, patent and utility model filings decreased a little by 1.8% and 1.6% respectively compared to the same period of previous year, while design and trademark filings increased by 0.7% and 11.1% each.
Filings by middlesize companies, public companies and domestic corporations have increased by 190.8%, 25.3% and 16.5% each compared to the same period of previous year, while filings by large companies decreased by 14.6%. When classified per countries, filings by Japanese applicants whose economy is still sagging decreased by 31.3% with 4,006 applications, and filings by US and Germany applicants decreased by 22.8% and 30.1% respectively. Especially standing out in patent filings compared to the previous year are companies such as LG Display (74.2%), LG Innotech(53.1%) and KAIST(35.2%).
