Green wind blows in the field of Electrical Outlet
It is shown that patent applications on the standbyelectricityreducingtype of electrical outlet recently increased, which can reduce standby electric power consumption occurred when the cord is plugged into the electrical outlet even if the power of electric appliance is turned off. It is analyzed that R&D (research and development) on green technologies such as energy conservation and etc. is active while the number of the patent applications on electrical outlet has been decreased over all.
According to KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office), although the total patent applications related to electrical outlet was 208 cases in 2009, an decrease of 14% over last year, the patent application on the standbyelectricityreducingtype of electrical outlet was 59 cases in 2009, an increase of 64% over last year and 28 cases until this April, increase of 180% over last year. Until 2008, the patent application on the electrical outlet to reduce standby electric power consumption accounted for 15% of total patent applications on electrical outlets but 28% in 2009 and 35% this year.
That is understood by the lowcarbongreengrowth policy to save energy. Starting this year, according to ‘the regulations about housing and construction standards and etc.’, in apartment houses with more than 20 households, the installation of the device blocking out standby electricity became an obligation, and in accordance with ‘energyuserationalization legislation’, the number of the subject items for the warning sign of standby electricity has been increased to 12. Also, as government supports for the technologies on energy conservation resulting from the implementation of ‘the lowcarbongreengrowth fundamental’ last April, it is expected that the size of the market for the products blocking out standby electricity will be bigger.
The technologies used for the electrical outlet to reduce standby electricity filed for its patent in 2009 consisted of 1) blocking out by insideandoutside signal control (34%), 2) the mechanical method using sliding, spinning or magnet (28%), 3) detecting power supply output or interface desorption (22%), 4) the method of blocking out by detecting the body heat or sound (16%) and etc.
As the applicants for the last five years consisted of individuals (75%), small and medium sized businesses (23%) and large companies (2%), the patent applications filed by individuals and small and mediumsized businesses are much more than those by large companies. As the ratio of filling patent applications by small and mediumsized business was 19% in 2008, increased up to 27% in 2009 and reached 55% by April in 2010, the technical development by small and mediumsized businesses appeared to be active.
KIPO is operating a variety of support programs such as the supports for writing a Patent Map report, patent management consulting and etc., and they are examining the patent application on green technologies first related to energy conservation prior to general patent applications. Therefore, if using them well, it is expected that businesses can be pushed forward by achieving patent right on the technologies as soon as possible.
