Inchon, Korea to host 43rd General Assembly of AIPPI;
South Korean appointed as chairman of
International property rights organization
South Korea won the equivalent of 2 gold medals during the 42nd General Assembly of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, held in Paris, France, on October 6, 2010. Inchon, Korea, was confirmed as the host city of the 43rd General Assembly of the AIPPI, to be held in 2012, and Kim YunBae was appointed as chairman of AIPPI.
The selection of Inchon marks the end of a process that began in 2004, when Korea was named the host country, beating out Canada, Denmark, and the Czech Republic at the AIPPI 39th General Assembly. In November 2009, AIPPIKorea and Inchon city signed an MOU, agreeing to jointly promote Inchon as the venue of the 2012 AIPPI General Assembly. AIPPIKorea and Inchon sent delegates to the 42nd AIPPI to make their final case before members and attendees.
In addition to the final confirmation of Inchon as the 2012 host city, Kim, the previous vicechairman of AIPPI and chairman of AIPPIKorea since 2008, was selected to lead the international organization. As AIPPI’s chairman, he will play a leading role globally in the field of intellectual property rights.
AIPPI has a close connection with numerous international organizations in patentrelated areas, such as WIPO [affiliates of the UN], WTO, UNDP, and EU Commission. AIPPI has contributed to international treaties, legislation, and policy decisions related to intellectual property rights. Representatives of AIPPIKorea expect that holding the 2012 General Assembly of AIPPI in Inchon will raise the international profile of the city in terms of economic, social and culture issues.
