preoccupy patents on 3D technology in worldwide competition
Application technologies for TV·contents are widely spread…Samsung·LG take rapid steps for market predominance
It is pointed out that preoccupying patents on 3D technology is essential to occupy the market share in advance as the 3D image technology is expected to extend to various fields of industry.
According to the industry and KOTRA on February 7, as 3D technology emerges as a core trend for leading the market this year, 3D application technology is expanding rapidly, and the companies related are trying to acquire staple patents of the technology for prior occupation of the market.
As the 3D technology gets focused in the market, application fields are being rapidly extended from TV, display and contents to monitor, photograph, glasses, mobile phones and advertisement, according to the industry. Especially, 3D TV, 3D photos and 3D movies are drawing attentions as a leadingtechnical field in the future 3D market.
The importance of preoccupying patents and standards on 3D technology is getting higher as 3D application technology grows rapidly. It is pointed out that a lot of efforts are needed for prior occupation of niche markets since many technologies including 3D advertisement and 3D photoalbums using a flat screen display, 3D holographic display and 3D touch panel technology are expected to be commercialized in the near future.
Actually, stiff competition for preoccupying patents on 3D technology has already begun with sharp increase in the filings of related patents. The number of patents on 3D TV has increased from 612 in 2003 to 1034 in 2008, with 486 registrations in the first half of 2009. The number of patents on 3D photos has also increased from 460 to 720 during the same period, with 368 applications in the first half of 2009. In the field of 3D movies, the number increased from 103 in 2003 to 149 in 2008.
Korean companies have also jumped into the competition for acquiring 3D patents and standards in advance. KeunsikYun, the president of the Image Display division of Samsung Electronics, said at the CES held last month that they had filed over 400 patent applications related to 3D technology in the US and therefore, they would provide supreme quality of 3D TV image based on their technical skills.
